Commemorating National Social Work Appreciation Month

As we commemorate National Social Work Appreciation Month, it's important to recognize the invaluable contributions of these dedicated professionals who are unwavering in their commitment to helping others.

Social workers are a fundamental backbone of our society's support system - embodying empathy, resilience, and expertise. They provide support to people of all backgrounds and serve as advisors, counselors, and facilitators. Social workers possess a unique ability to meet individuals, families, and communities where they are, empowering others to achieve their goals and navigate crises. And, they connect those in need to valuable resources. Whether in hospitals, schools, government agencies, or community centers, social workers tirelessly advocate for vulnerable populations, address systemic barriers, and drive positive change.

Within Shades of Pink Foundation (SOPF), oncology social workers play a vital role. Along with case managers, nurses, patient and financial navigators, oncology social workers help us identify and assist breast cancer patients who are struggling financially due to their diagnosis. They are valued partners in our ability to fulfill our mission. In 2023, SOPF provided greater financial assistance than we ever have in our 19-year history, and our referral partners were essential in helping us achieve this significant accomplishment.

As a token of our deep appreciation, we host an Annual Comedy Event that honors these valued partners and complimentary tickets are provided to our social workers, case managers, nurses, patient and financial navigators. This year’s event will be held on October 1 as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. More information about this special event will be shared on SOPF’s website in the coming months.

As an oncology social worker, I am constantly amazed at the strength and resilience I witness in patients and families living with a cancer diagnosis. My life has been enriched through this work, and knowing I can help people through a difficult time is its own reward. I am grateful to the oncology social work community; SOPF has been an invaluable partner in the work that we do.

We are proud to celebrate these everyday heroes in March, and all year long.
